    Out of 1,478 candidates contesting, nearly 20% are identified as crorepatis, predominantly from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The financial disclosures reveal varied wealth among the candidates, with the poorest individual declaring assets of just Rs 500, representing the AJUP party.

    Criminal Backgrounds

    BJP Nominees

    Among the 152 BJP nominees, a concerning trend is observed: 106 candidates have pending criminal cases, with 96 involved in serious offenses.

    TMC Nominees

    Similarly, within the TMC, 63 out of 148 nominees also have pending criminal cases, with 48 of them facing serious charges.

    Financial Insights from Candidates’ Affidavits

    The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and West Bengal Election Watch compiled these figures based on the analysis of 1,475 candidates’ affidavits, noting minor discrepancies in three cases.

    Wealth Distribution

    • 228 candidates have assets ranging between Rs 1 crore and Rs 5 crore.
    • 46 candidates possess assets between Rs 5 crore and Rs 10 crore.
    • 35 candidates declare assets exceeding Rs 10 crore.

    In the breakdown:

    • TMC boasts 106 crorepatis.
    • BJP has 71 crorepatis.
    • Congress counts 50.
    • CPM includes 24.

    Leading Wealthy Candidates

    The list of the wealthiest candidates is led by Jakir Hossain from TMC, with astounding assets exceeding Rs 133 crore. Other notable candidates include:

    • Goutam Mishra (TMC, Rs 105 crore)
    • Kabi Datta (TMC, Rs 72 crore).

    The Poorest Candidates

    Conversely, the most financially challenged candidates include:

    • Rubiya Begam from AJUP with assets of Rs 500 in Durgapur East.
    • Sushrita Saren from SUCI in Midnapore with Rs 700.
    • Jashoda Barman from Jalpaiguri with Rs 924.

    Criminal Case Statistics

    The analysis reveals that 23% of candidates possess pending criminal cases, with 20% accused of serious offenses.
