Ajit Pawar Defends NCP’s Candidates Amid Criminal Allegations

Background on NCP’s Decision

In a recent statement, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar defended the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) choice to field candidates with criminal backgrounds for upcoming civic polls. He asserted that no individual should be labeled as a criminal until proven guilty, emphasizing the importance of due process.

Response to Criticism from BJP

Pawar’s remarks follow criticism from Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who condemned the NCP for endorsing candidates with alleged criminal ties. In his defense, Pawar stated, “Everyone knows I never support such elements.”

Notable Candidates with Allegations

The NCP is facing scrutiny as it has nominated Sonali Andekar and her sister-in-law Laxmi Andekar, both of whom are linked to the notorious gang leader Suryakant ‘Bandu’ Andekar. They are currently accused in the murder case of Bandu Andekar’s grandson, Ayush Komkar, and remain incarcerated. The NCP is collaborating with the RPI (Sachin Kharat faction) for the civic elections set for January 15.

Pawar’s Personal Allegations

Pawar also touched on personal allegations against himself, referencing a Rs 70,000 crore irrigation scam. He questioned the validity of labeling someone guilty without clear proof, drawing attention to the political implications of such accusations.

Questions on Irregularities and Financial Management

During a press conference in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pawar voiced concerns over financial mismanagement in the local civic body, which he claimed has driven the corporation into debt. He pointed out that the municipality, once considered the richest in Asia, has seen a significant downturn in its finances.

“Over the past few years, deposits worth nearly Rs 8,000 crore have vanished. It’s crucial to demonstrate work that justifies this spending,” he insisted.

The Future of NCP in Governance

Pawar highlighted that the BJP held power in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation from 2017 to 2022. Currently, the municipality is under a government-appointed administrator. He promised that should the NCP regain power, an investigation into the financial irregularities would be initiated.
