Union Home Minister Amit Shah concluded his two-day visit to poll-bound Tamil Nadu on Monday. The trip ended without any significant breakthroughs in the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) presence in the state.

There was widespread speculation that Shah would initiate alliance discussions with potential partners such as the Patali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). Additionally, observers were hopeful for a resolution to the ongoing impasse between TTV Dhinakaran and O Panneerselvam.

No Meeting with AIADMK Leadership

Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the AIADMK general secretary, was expected to travel to Trichy for a meeting with Shah. However, the meeting never materialized. According to a BJP member, "Such a meeting was not scheduled. Also, the public meeting attended by Shah in Pudukottai was a BJP event, not an NDA event. Hence, allies were not invited."

Former AIADMK minister S.P. Velumani did manage to meet Shah twice during the visit, with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal present for the first meeting. Despite the significance of these discussions, both AIADMK and BJP functionaries chose to remain tight-lipped about the content of the talks.

Future Visits and Political Strategies

BJP sources mention that Amit Shah may return to Chennai later this month to potentially meet with Edappadi K. Palaniswami, which could have implications for future alliances and electoral strategies.

Visiting Temples and Community Engagement

During his visit, Shah also chaired a BJP core committee meeting on Sunday and visited significant temples, including Jambukeswarar in Thiruvanaikoil and Ranganathaswamy in Srirangam. He subsequently attended the ‘Namma Ooru Modi Pongal Vizha’ celebration organized by the BJP, showcasing a traditional Pongal event with 1,008 pots. However, his time at the gathering was brief, lasting less than 30 minutes.
