New Delhi: The Indian Army has officially launched its inaugural comprehensive technology roadmap focused on unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and loitering munitions. This strategic document is designed to provide long-term visibility into the Army’s evolving requirements in this critical area.

The document, titled "Indian Army’s Technology Roadmap for Unmanned Aerial Systems and Loitering Munitions," spans nearly 50 pages. It was unveiled by Lt Gen Rahul R Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Capability Development & Sustenance), on April 6 in New Delhi. The roadmap aims to provide actionable visibility for industry stakeholders, academic institutions, and research and development organizations, thereby enabling efficient allocation of investments, time, and resources towards the Army’s prioritized areas.

The roadmap categorizes 30 types of UAS and loitering munitions into five distinct categories:

• Air Defence Roles
• Special Roles

During the event, Lt Gen Rahul R Singh highlighted the sensitive nature of the document, urging stakeholders to refrain from sharing it with unauthorized individuals. He expressed concerns that adversaries like Pakistan and China may be interested in obtaining this information, emphasizing the need for extreme caution.

Learning from Global Conflicts

Referencing the West Asia conflict, Lt Gen Singh pointed to the deployment of Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones and the U.S. "reverse-engineered" LUCAS (Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System) as examples to consider. He stated, "We all need to be aware of this and much more to ensure we act as a well-oiled machine in case of conflict."

A Collaborative Approach to Defense Innovation

Lt Gen Singh described the collaboration between the army, industry, and academia as a "troika," noting that engagement in this sector has significantly expanded in recent years. Maj Gen C S Mann, ADG of the Army Design Bureau, reaffirmed that this is the first instance of the army publicly sharing such detailed specifications regarding UAS and loitering munitions, which reflects the importance of these capabilities.
