High Voter Participation Compared to Previous Elections
On Thursday, Kerala, Puducherry, and Assam reported impressive voter turnout rates, surpassing those from the 2021 assembly elections. According to data released by the Election Commission, Puducherry topped the list with a participation rate of 89.20%, which is a significant increase from around 82.2% in the last election. Following closely, Assam recorded a turnout of 85.10%, up from 82.04% in 2021. Meanwhile, Kerala saw a turnout of 77.50%, which is slightly higher than the previous rate of approximately 76%.
Polling Details and Election Logistics
The voting process took place for 126 seats in Assam, 140 in Kerala, and 30 in Puducherry. After polling concluded, officials securely sealed the electronic voting machines (EVMs) along with the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units at the respective booths. The counting of votes for all three regions is scheduled for May 4.
Voter Demographics in Kerala
In Kerala, over 2.6 crore voters were eligible to participate across 140 constituencies, with 883 candidates contesting. The demographic breakdown showed that there were 1,38,27,319 women voters, 1,31,26,048 male voters, and 277 from the third gender. Notably, 4,24,518 voters fell within the 18–19 age group, while 2,04,608 voters were aged 85 and older. A total of 30,471 polling stations were set up to facilitate the voting process.
Political Landscape in Kerala
The primary contest in Kerala is between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), which has been in power for the past decade, and the United Democratic Front (UDF), which is trying to unseat it. Additionally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is also in the race, challenging both major fronts.
Voter Statistics in Assam
In Assam, more than 2.5 crore voters were eligible for the 126-member assembly elections, with 722 candidates vying for seats. The electorate included 1,25,31,552 male voters, 1,25,22,593 female voters, and 318 transgender voters. The main competition is taking place between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress-led alliance.
Election Dynamics in Puducherry
Puducherry registered a voter base of 10,14,070, with 30 assembly seats at stake. The electorate comprised 5,39,125 women, 4,74,788 men, and 157 from the third gender. In this region, 24,156 voters were aged between 18–19 years old. The ruling NDA, consisting of the All India NR Congress and the BJP, is contending with the Congress-DMK alliance, while actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam also adds complexity to the electoral scenario, making it a triangular contest.
