IPL Ban and Its Impact

Tensions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have escalated following the exclusion of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad for the 2026 IPL season. Despite acquiring him for ₹9.2 crore during the mini-auction, KKR opted not to include him in their roster.

In response to this decision, Bangladesh has enforced a ban on IPL broadcasts in the country—a significant move, as this marks the first time since the league’s inception in 2008 that such a ban has occurred.

Who is Bangladeshi Umpire Sharfuddoula?

Sharfuddoula has been appointed as the TV umpire for the first ODI match. Originating from Dhaka, he has an impressive officiating record, including 32 Tests, 118 ODIs, 75 T20Is, 17 women’s ODIs, and 28 women’s T20Is. In 2024, during a Test match between Australia and West Indies in Brisbane, he made history as the second Bangladeshi umpire to serve as a neutral umpire in a Test.

A former left-arm spinner, Sharfuddoula represented Bangladesh in the ICC Trophy in 1994, achieving six wickets in three matches. He briefly worked as a coach before assuming an administrative position with the BCB.

• Clause 2.1.4: The ICC is responsible for appointing one umpire for each ODI, who must not be from the same country as the participating teams and should belong to the Elite Panel or International Panel.

• Clause 2.1.5: The home board must appoint one umpire from its own Elite or International Panel.

• Clause 2.1.7: For matches utilizing the Decision Review System (DRS), the ICC will appoint a third umpire. This umpire, who will act as the emergency on-field umpire and handle DRS duties, must also not be from the same country as the participating teams and must be selected from the Elite Panel or International Panel.
