Proposed Guidelines for Battery Pack Aadhaar Number in India

    Introduction to the New Initiative

In a significant move to enhance consumer awareness and accountability, the Indian government has proposed guidelines for a Battery Pack Aadhaar Number system. This initiative aims to track the origin and manufacturing details of all batteries, offering consumers insights into their battery’s life and performance.

Understanding the Battery Pack Aadhaar Number

What is the Battery Pack Aadhaar Number?

The Battery Pack Aadhaar Number will feature a machine-readable, 21-character alphanumeric code along with a QR code. These codes will store essential information about each battery pack.

The Concept of a "Battery Passport"

This digital framework, often referred to as a "battery passport," is designed to monitor batteries throughout their lifecycle—from manufacturing and usage to recycling and disposal. Initially focused on electric vehicle (EV) applications, the guidelines will later extend to industrial batteries with capacities greater than 2 kWh. It’s important to note that SLI (Starting, Lighting, Ignition) and portable batteries are currently outside the scope of this initiative.

    Key Features of the Guidelines

    Static and Dynamic Data

The proposed guidelines outline that each battery’s code will contain static data, including:

    • Battery materials
    • Descriptors
    • Carbon footprint parameters

This static data will be publicly accessible and only change if there is a physical component replacement or modifications in the battery’s operational parameters. Furthermore, dynamic data related to battery performance will be stored and updated on a server, providing users with real-time insights.

    Industry Perspectives

    Insights from Luminous Power Technologies

Preeti Bajaj, CEO and Managing Director of Luminous Power Technologies, emphasized that this initiative represents a "pivotal shift for India’s battery ecosystem." She pointed out that it creates transparency throughout the battery lifecycle—from manufacturing to end-of-life recycling. Bajaj also noted that the framework aligns with global practices, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable battery management.

    Conclusion

The proposed Battery Pack Aadhaar Number guidelines are set to transform India’s battery industry by providing enhanced transparency and consumer information. As this initiative unfolds, it could pave the way for more responsible battery usage and recycling in the country.
