Trump’s fascination with Greenland is not new. According to Forbes, his former national security adviser, John Bolton, revealed that Trump first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in late 2018. Bolton mentioned that a prominent businessman suggested this acquisition, later identified as Ronald Lauder, a long-time associate of Trump.

Lauder, known for funding conservative candidates, has also taken commercial interests in Greenland. A report by the Danish newspaper Politiken revealed that Lauder invested in a struggling Greenlandic freshwater bottling company, raising concerns about the intertwining of business interests and political influence.

Bezos, Gates, and the Race for Rare Earths

While Trump’s ambitions may lean political, some of the tech industry’s biggest names have opted for a more commercial approach in Greenland. Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Michael Bloomberg have invested in KoBold Metals, a company leveraging AI to explore rare earth minerals critical for technology production. These investments, initiated in 2019, were funneled through Breakthrough Energy, a fund led by Gates aimed at fostering green energy innovation.

Forbes reported that Breakthrough Energy was involved in KoBold’s Series C funding round in December 2024, which boosted the company’s valuation to nearly $3 billion after a massive capital raise.

Strategy and Growing American Influence

Not all investments in Greenland are purely commercial ventures. Arctic security expert Marc Jacobsen posits that Lauder’s endeavors might lack genuine economic substance, emphasizing the strategic importance of relationships with Greenlandic decision-makers. Jacobsen also noted a rising American presence in Greenland, partly due to new direct flights between New York and Nuuk.

However, Greenland’s political leaders have firmly rejected these notions, emphasizing self-determination. In a united statement, they declared, “We do not want to be Americans… we want to be Greenlanders,” showcasing their desire to maintain independence amid external pressures.
