BJK Cup: Vaishnavi Adkar and Sahaja Yamalapalli Celebrate Milestone Wins for India

Chilly to Hot: Vaishnavi Adkar’s Rollercoaster Performance

NEW DELHI: The weather in Delhi mirrored the contrasting fortunes of Vaishnavi Adkar during the BJK Cup. After experiencing a chilly match against Indonesia’s Aunchisa Chanta, where nerves overwhelmed her performance, she bounced back with confidence in her next encounter.

On Wednesday, facing New Zealand, Adkar displayed remarkable improvement and control, leveraging her strong forehands to secure a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Aishi Das. This win marked her first triumph representing the national team.

    Emotional Victory for Vaishnavi Adkar

Adkar expressed her joy post-match, stating, "This is something that I have been looking forward to for many years. Being a part of the playing five and securing a victory means a lot to me." The crowd’s support played a significant role in boosting her spirits.

Despite her earlier struggles, Adkar seized the opportunity, serving an ace to claim the first set. Although she faced a momentary setback in the second set, she quickly regained her focus, capitalizing on her opponent’s errors.

    Weather Impact on Performance

Reflecting on the conditions, Adkar shared her insights: "When it’s cold, the ball travels a bit faster, and in the warmth, it feels heavy. It was definitely more controlled today than yesterday, which helped my performance."

Sahaja Yamalapalli Achieves Her First Win

Vaishnavi wasn’t the only Indian celebrating a significant victory. Sahaja Yamalapalli also marked her first win in the BJK Cup, putting an end to a series of hard-fought matches. Since her debut against China in 2024, Yamalapalli had faced tough challenges, but she finally secured a win after defeating Valentina Ivanov 6-1, 6-3 in just 76 minutes.

Yamalapalli maintained a positive outlook, acknowledging her rocky past but emphasizing her commitment to focus on each match rather than her record.

    Dominant Performance by India

Sahaja, having come through the US Collegiate system, bounced back impressively despite losing the early game, claiming the next eight games consecutively. Her victory assured India of an unbeatable scoreline in the competition.

Rutuja Bhosale and Ankita Raina further solidified Team India’s success by winning their matches against Monique Barry and Erin Routliffe 6-4, 6-2, bringing the team’s overall score to 3-0.
