BJP Councillor Resignation Amid Backlash

Tushar Apte Resigns from Councillor Position

BADLAPUR: Tushar Apte, recently appointed as a co-opted councillor by the BJP in the Kulgaon-Badlapur municipal council, has resigned following political backlash. His resignation came on Saturday, just a day after his appointment, as reported by Pradeep Gupta.

Background of the Case

Apte is one of the accused in the 2024 Badlapur school sexual abuse case. He was allegedly charged with failing to report the incident under the Pocso Act while he was serving as the secretary of the school trust where the abuse took place.

Reasons for Resignation

Following directives from BJP’s Maharashtra president, Ravindra Chavan, Apte decided to step down. In his statement to the media, he emphasized that his resignation was to protect the reputation of both the school and the BJP. “I’m resigning from the post of co-opted councillor so that neither the school nor the BJP are defamed,” he stated. He submitted his resignation to the Thane district collector and the municipal council’s chief executive officer.

Political Controversy and Criticism

Apte’s appointment as one of the five co-opted councillors had drawn significant criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups, further fueling the controversy surrounding his involvement in the case.
