Dramatic Encounter: Shoplifter Tries to Shoot Police Officer in Ohio

In a shocking turn of events, a shoplifting suspect in Ohio nearly succeeded in shooting a police officer at close range inside a Walmart. The harrowing incident was caught on body camera footage, showcasing the terrifying moments that unfolded.

    The Incident Unfolds

The alarming incident took place on Thursday in Canton, Ohio, when officers were called to respond to an alleged theft involving 21-year-old Shane Newman and his accomplice, Katerina Jeffrey. Both suspects were detained and taken to the store’s security room for questioning.

    Bodycam Footage Reveals Tension

Initially, the bodycam footage displayed a calm atmosphere. A Walmart employee handed an officer a pen and paper while the suspects sat quietly on a bench. However, the tranquility was short-lived. In an unexpected move, Newman pulled out a handgun and attempted to shoot the officer, prompting Jeffrey to scream, "No, no, no!" Fortunately, the gun malfunctioned, making a clicking sound instead of firing.

    Quick Action by Walmart Employee

As tensions escalated, a Walmart worker quickly intervened, jumping on Newman to restrain him. Despite the chaos, Newman managed to raise the firearm again, only for it to click ominously once more. The employee succeeded in knocking the weapon from Newman’s grip, allowing the officer to draw his own firearm and shout, "Get back! Get back!"

    Officer Reacts with Caution

The officer quickly pinned Newman to the floor as backup arrived. In a statement to Fox News, the officer recounted the harrowing moment: "He pulled the gun out, pointed it at my head, and pulled the trigger," but the weapon did not fire. The officer revealed that he contemplated shooting Newman but was concerned for the safety of the Walmart employee who was grappling with the suspect.

    Prior Warnings and Arrests

Earlier in the encounter, the officer was informed that Newman had an active warrant and was considered "armed and dangerous." During a preliminary search, the officer overlooked a firearm that Newman had hidden in his shoulder bag.

Following the encounter, Newman was charged with attempted murder and felonious assault on a police officer, while Jeffrey faces charges of complicity to commit robbery and possessing weapons under disability.

    A Close Call

Before the shocking events unfolded, the officer had asked Newman if he had anything illegal on him. To this, Newman handed over a small container that later tested positive for illegal drugs. When Jeffrey inquired about their fate, asking, "Are we going to jail?" the officer replied, "Not unless something crazy happens"—a chilling understatement given the chaos that ensued just moments later.
