NEW DELHI: Sameer Wankhede, the IRS-Customs officer previously involved with the Narcotics Control Bureau, recently secured a significant reprieve from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). This decision comes after Wankhede faced disciplinary charges from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) linked to a controversially managed drug case involving Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan‘s son.
CAT Overturns Disciplinary Charges
The principal bench of the CAT, led by chairman Ranjit More, has accepted Wankhede’s challenge against an August 2025 charge memorandum issued by the CBIC. The court has restrained the authorities from proceeding with any disciplinary measures as the charges are currently subject to litigation before the Bombay High Court.
Implications of the Tribunal’s Ruling
In its observations, the CAT highlighted that the CBIC must maintain the rule of law. The bench noted that the charge memorandum appears disconnected from the actual allegations and instead suggests retaliation against Wankhede, potentially aimed at hindering his career advancements.
Concerns Over Administrative Conduct
The ruling also addressed concerns regarding the actions of the CBIC, suggesting that such behavior is indicative of “malice in law and personal vendetta.” The tribunal cautioned the CBIC about facing potential costs if they do not rectify their practices and establish a fair administrative system that upholds the rule of law.
