Fresh Snowfall Marks the Start of Chillai-Kalan in Kashmir

    Overview of Chillai-Kalan

NEW DELHI: The higher reaches of Kashmir have recently experienced fresh snowfall, while the plains have been greeted with rain. This weather change brings much-needed relief as Chillai-Kalan, the Valley’s harshest 40-day winter period, commences after an extended dry spell.

    Snowfall Reports Across Kashmir

Officials noted that Gulmarg, a popular tourist resort in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir, reported approximately two inches of fresh snow accumulation. Snowfall began early Sunday morning in Sonamarg along the Srinagar–Kargil highway and persisted throughout the day.

    Key Snowfall Areas

    • Sadhna Top: This mountain pass, connecting the Tangdhar sector to the rest of the Kashmir Valley, recorded around six inches of snow since Saturday night.
    • Srinagar: Light rainfall was observed overnight in Srinagar and other areas, continuing intermittently through Sunday.

    Weather Forecast

The weather department has predicted an increase in rainfall and snowfall throughout Kashmir over the next 48 hours. This precipitation is a welcome change after a prolonged dry period, which had led to increased cases of common ailments like cough and cold among vulnerable populations, particularly children and the elderly.

    Cultural Significance of Snowfall

For locals, the snow and rain on the first day of Chillai-Kalan are traditionally seen as a good omen, heralding ample snowfall in the weeks to come.

    Preparedness for Heavy Snowfall

Authorities have made arrangements to manage the anticipated heavy snowfall. Preparations have been reviewed for roads, power, water supply, health services, and essential commodities. CM Omar Abdullah mentioned, "I took a review of both divisions, especially areas where it is expected to snow. The administration has finalized all preparations, but the effectiveness will only be known once it starts to snow."

Positive Impact on Air Quality and Tourism

While some hardships may arise from the snowfall, it is expected to improve air quality and boost winter tourism, which faced challenges due to a largely dry winter last year. Abdullah expressed optimism, stating, "Even if we face some hardships due to the snow, we have been eagerly awaiting it. It will clear the air, mitigate pollution, and kick off the winter tourism season."

    Conclusion: What to Expect

Chillai-Kalan, often referred to as the “big cold,” will continue until January 30. Following this period, the Valley will transition into the milder Chillai-Khurd and Chillai-Bacha phases.
