Mamata Banerjee’s Urgent Meeting with District Magistrates
NEW DELHI: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee convened an unexpected meeting with district magistrates at the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Tuesday. She addressed pressing concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, urging officials to ensure that voters do not suffer due to “logical discrepancies.”
Ensuring Compliance with Supreme Court Directives
During the meeting, which was chaired by Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, the CM emphasized the importance of adhering strictly to the Supreme Court’s directives regarding SIR hearings. A senior official stated, “The CM made it clear that all hearings must be conducted in accordance with the apex court’s instructions to prevent any inconvenience.” Banerjee urged officials to adopt a humanitarian approach in handling voter issues.
Acceptance of Supreme Court Validated Documents
Banerjee highlighted that documents deemed valid by the Supreme Court must be accepted during the hearings without exceptions. She also mandated that district magistrates ensure receipts are provided after document submission to streamline the process.
Alternative Arrangements for Voters
The Chief Minister further stressed the need for alternative arrangements for voters who cannot attend hearings on specified dates. She insisted that while the Election Commission’s activities should persist, the state’s development programs should not be disrupted “under any circumstance.”
Supreme Court’s Recent Directives Provide Relief
On Monday, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to publicly display the names of individuals on the ‘logical discrepancies’ list at gram panchayat bhavans and block offices. This includes the ability for documents and objections to be submitted. Additionally, the court extended the timeline for electors to submit documentation by an extra 10 days to confirm their inclusion in the state electoral roll.
The latest directives have offered significant relief to numerous voters in Kolkata who faced hearings due to discrepancies found in their voter records.
