NEW DELHI: The Congress party has expelled former MLA Mohammed Moquim just days after he requested Sonia Gandhi to consider replacing party president Mallikarjun Kharge, citing concerns regarding his age. The party attributes his expulsion to “anti-party activities,” though specifics have not been disclosed.
Official Notice from Congress
The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) issued a notice stating, “This is for the information of all concerned that AICC has approved the proposal for the expulsion of Sri Md. Moquim from the primary membership of the party due to anti-party activities.”
Moquim’s Call for Younger Leadership
In his letter to Sonia Gandhi, Moquim emphasized the necessity for younger leaders to guide the party, mentioning that the Grand Old Party is currently in a “difficult phase.” He stated, “I have written a letter to Sonia Gandhi stating that the party needs her advice and new leadership… Age is not on Kharge’s side.” He also referenced concerns about the upcoming Nuapada by-elections.
Criticism from Within the Party
Moquim faced backlash for his remarks, with OPCC chief Bhakta Das comparing his statements to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and suggesting that those who challenge party leadership should join the BJP.
Contents of Moquim’s Letter
In his correspondence, Moquim highlighted recent electoral defeats in Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Kashmir, attributing them to “a series of wrong decisions and misguided leadership choices.” He expressed concern over a “deeper organisational disconnect” and questioned whether responsibilities are being properly delegated within the party.
BJP’s Reaction to the Internal Rift
The BJP quickly seized upon the situation, with Shehzad Poonawalla commenting on the “internal rift” and suggesting a need for deeper structural change within Congress to appease the Indian youth. He noted the disconnect between current leadership and the youth demographic, especially under Kharge’s leadership.
Past Controversies Involving Moquim
This isn’t the first time Moquim has found himself embroiled in controversy. He was suspended on July 15, 2023, for questioning party leadership, a suspension that was retracted in January 2024. Additionally, in July 2022, he faced a show-cause notice for cross-voting in support of NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu. Furthermore, after his conviction in a state vigilance case on September 29, 2022, Moquim was disqualified from contesting the 2024 elections, with his seat now held by his daughter, Sofia Firdous.
