Nick Shirley’s viral Minnesota daycare video is now facing fresh scrutiny. Irish journalist Caolan Robertson claims that Shirley once told him his work was more of “satire” than actual journalism. This revelation comes at a time when Shirley’s recent allegations of fraud are gaining significant attention online, including from high-profile figures.
Controversial Claims About Daycare Centers
Shirley’s Minnesota video, posted in mid-December, suggested that daycare centers were empty while receiving public funds. The clip quickly went viral and was retweeted by JD Vance, who praised Shirley’s work as “far more useful” than the 2024 Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting.
Caolan Robertson’s Doubts
However, Robertson has raised serious concerns about Shirley’s credibility. In a previous interview conducted in Ukraine, Robertson accused Shirley of producing videos that implied there wasn’t a war occurring. When confronted in Kyiv, Shirley reportedly admitted that his work was not genuine journalism but rather a form of satire.
“When I confronted Nick about what he did here in Kyiv, he said his actions weren’t journalism, they were satire, and his entire reporting narrative started to crumble,” Robertson stated.
Shirley’s Selective Reporting Tactics
Robertson claims Shirley employs the same pattern in various locations: filming select areas, making grand claims, and departing without presenting the full context. “Nick has a very specific talent. He shows up somewhere, films a couple of streets, announces he’s cracked the whole story. No data, no depth. Just vibes,” he commented.
In Minnesota, Shirley spotlighted the ABC Learning Center, alleging it was empty. However, CBS News later visited the center and found more than a dozen children engaged in learning activities alongside several staff members.

Director Ahmed Hasan told CBS News that the children were busy working on math and basic language skills. His wife, Umi Hasan, who also helps run the center, believes Shirley’s video had a politically motivated agenda.
“We pay our taxes and strive to be law-abiding citizens. When one Somali does something wrong, we all face collective punishment,” Umi Hasan expressed. Additionally, Ahmed Hasan noted that the center received numerous calls from outside Minnesota in the aftermath of the viral video, adding to the stress of both staff and families.
