Groin Injury Revelation
Sam Curran has recently disclosed the details surrounding his groin injury, which led to his withdrawal from IPL 2026. The England all-rounder admitted that the issue had been persistent for a while before he had to make the difficult decision to step back from the tournament.
Impact on IPL and Rajasthan Royals
Curran, who was set to join the Rajasthan Royals following a recent trade, withdrew shortly before the tournament commenced after England’s participation in the T20 World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals. In an interview with the BBC, he mentioned, “It’s an injury that I’ve kind of been battling with a little bit. It has gradually got fractionally worse.”
Medical Assessment and Decision
Following the T20 World Cup, scans revealed the extent of his injury. “I went for a couple of scans, and it showed reasonable damage, so I had to make the tough decision. It was hindering me quite a bit,” he explained. The 27-year-old expressed his frustration, noting, “To miss the IPL was very disappointing… but now I have a rehab block of trying to get strong and fit.”
Focus on Rehabilitation
Currently, Curran is undergoing rehabilitation in England, though the timeline for his return remains uncertain. He stated, “It’s all going to come down to symptoms. It is obviously still a way off from that,” raising doubts about his involvement in upcoming domestic competitions.
Moreover, he is unlikely to join Surrey immediately and is uncertain about leading the team in the T20 Blast. “It is probably my first time to do a bit of rehab back in England,” Curran noted. Despite the setback, he remains optimistic: “It will be tough to watch the IPL because I know that I’d like to have been there, but injuries are part of sport.”
Replacement and Growing Concerns
In Curran’s absence, the Rajasthan Royals have appointed Dasun Shanaka as his replacement for the season. His withdrawal adds to the list of high-profile players missing from the tournament this year, highlighting the increasing physical demands associated with a busy cricket calendar.
