Eight Militants Arrested in Manipur: Key Updates

Background of the Arrests

IMPHAL: In a significant operation, security forces apprehended eight active members affiliated with various factions of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) across Imphal East and Imphal West districts. The information was confirmed by police officials on Saturday.

Arrests in Imphal East District

Four members of the proscribed KCP (People’s War Group) were arrested from the Andro Leitanpekpham area of Imphal East district on Thursday. A senior officer disclosed that during this operation, authorities seized one .32 pistol, along with a magazine, three live rounds, and two radio sets from the arrested individuals.

Arrests in Imphal West District

In a separate operation, three active cadres from the outlawed KCP (Taibanganba) were taken into custody from the Langol Game village Zone-II area in Imphal West district. Reports indicate that these individuals were temporarily residing at a relief camp in Langol Game village.

Additionally, one cadre from the banned KCP (Ibungo Ngangom) was apprehended from a farmhouse in the Langol area of Imphal West.

Continued Search Operations

The police have been conducting extensive search operations in Manipur since the outbreak of ethnic violence two years ago. The ongoing strife between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups has resulted in more than 260 fatalities, leaving thousands homeless since May 2023.

Government Response

Following the escalating violence, the Centre imposed President’s rule in Manipur on February 13 after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, originally elected to serve until 2027, has been placed under suspended animation.
