Overview of India’s Energy Support to Neighbors
In light of increasing geopolitical tensions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, several neighboring countries have turned to India for assistance with their energy needs. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted these developments in a recent briefing.
Support for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that India has maintained its commitment to supplying energy to Bangladesh since 2007. Recently, India also dispatched 38,000 metric tonnes of petroleum products to Sri Lanka at their request. Ongoing energy engagements with Nepal and Bhutan continue as part of India’s regional cooperation strategy.
Maldives’ Request for Petroleum Supplies
The government of the Maldives has formally reached out to India, seeking both short-term and long-term petroleum supplies. Jaiswal noted that these requests are under review, considering India’s own availability and needs.
Assurance of Safety for Indian Citizens
In regard to the safety of Indian nationals residing in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Jaiswal reassured the public that around 10 million Indians in the region are safe. “We remain in constant communication with our citizens,” he stated, albeit it is unfortunate that eight Indians have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict, with one individual still missing.
Monitoring Geopolitical Developments
Jaiswal emphasized that the Ministry of External Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Shipping and Indian embassies in the Gulf region, is dedicated to ensuring the safety and interests of Indian citizens. The situation is being closely monitored, especially concerning the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.
Updates on Evacuations
Additionally, Jaiswal reported on evacuation efforts for Indian nationals in Iran. “A total of 204 Indians have successfully exited Iran through a land border into Azerbaijan, with some already returned home and others expected to follow soon.” The Indian government expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for facilitating the safe passage of its citizens.
Conclusion
As regional pressures mount, India’s proactive approach to energy supply requests and the welfare of its citizens showcases its commitment to regional stability and collaboration. The situation remains dynamic, and the Indian government continues to prioritize both energy needs and the safety of its people abroad.
