    What is Silverfin?

At Silverfin, we’re committed to leveraging software to modernize the traditional accounting industry. Our SaaS solutions automate much of the manual work currently performed by accountants, enabling them to offer improved services to their clients. We aim to optimize workflows so accountants can focus on the more impactful work of advising business owners.

We’re proud to report that our efforts are yielding results. More than 15,000 financial professionals utilize Silverfin to assist over 400,000 businesses. Our customers love our platform! There’s still much to achieve, and we hope you’ll be a part of this journey.

Since November 2023, we’ve been part of Visma, the European leader in mission-critical cloud software. This partnership gives us access to the resources and power of the Visma brand while maintaining our operational autonomy.

    Meet the Product Team

Our product team is cross-functional, fostering close collaboration between engineers, product managers, and designers. The team’s mission begins with identifying a user or business problem and working autonomously to devise a solution. Each team member is involved from understanding the issue through ideation and implementation to tracking the effectiveness of the solution. Our approach is influenced by the book “Inspired” by Marty Cagan.

What Does Working at Silverfin Look Like?

In addition to our four product teams, we have three additional platform teams that manage complex subsystems or support product teams with expertise, frameworks, and services.

Our operations team ensures seamless processes and deployment, following a DevOps mindset to foster collaboration between ops and development. We maintain a modern Rails monolith backend, utilizing PostgreSQL and Redis, all hosted on a Google Cloud Kubernetes cluster. Communication tools we use include GitLab, Quip, and Slack, with Google Meet for remote conferencing.

Code deployments require peer reviews, and testing is mandatory. We prioritize continuous improvement through regular retrospectives and embrace Kanban methodologies while allowing teams flexibility in their processes.

Despite the perception that accounting software may not be thrilling, we face numerous technical challenges. For scale, our database exceeds 10TB, and our largest table contains over 10 billion rows. We interact with more than 30 external APIs and provide an API for third parties.

What Makes the Engineering Team Unique?

We’re a remote-first team of 40 individuals across 14 countries, prioritizing work-life balance. We limit meetings, embrace reasonable deadlines, and avoid expecting overtime. Our workdays are designed to be predictable and unexciting, which is exactly what we desire.

Flexibility is key; you can take time off as needed without justification. Our team is structured to ensure coverage, and in rare instances where coverage is lacking, we will adjust workloads rather than disrupt any employee’s well-deserved vacation.

As a remote-first organization, we encourage asynchronous communication. We prioritize important discussions in written formats for a documented record. We minimize disruptions by encouraging focused work time and using tools like Slack judiciously.

While we enjoy virtual interaction, we also value in-person connections. We organize annual gatherings for the engineering team and join the entire company at least once a year for broader collaboration.

    Your Future at Silverfin

We believe personal growth is essential for motivation. At Silverfin, you don’t have to transition to a management role for advancement. We offer individual contributor and management tracks, allowing engineers to switch paths as they desire.

Each employee has a €1200 annual budget for conferences, courses, and workshops, covering the costs of accommodation and travel. If a conference falls on a workday, you’ll be compensated as usual.

    Requirements

    • At least 4 years of experience with Ruby, or 2 years with Ruby and 4 years in another programming language.
    • Experience with Javascript frameworks.
    • Work hours that overlap with EU business hours (local timezone within CET +/- 3h).
    • Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
