Under the new state law, Florida will begin indicating the legal status of individuals on driver’s licenses and ID cards that comply with REAL ID requirements. This legislative change is part of House Bill 991, signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis as part of the Florida SAVE Act, aimed at enhancing election security, according to the Miami Herald.
Details of the Law
Starting from January 1, 2027, all new, renewed, or replacement driver’s licenses issued in Florida will specify whether the holder is a US citizen or holds another legal immigration status. Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez commented on HB 991, calling it “a comprehensive measure that enhances verification processes and modernizes identification handling across Florida.”

Fernandez emphasized that including legal status in identification documents represents “a significant step toward greater transparency and accountability in government records.” He further stated that his office is working proactively to ensure a smooth implementation for residents as these changes take effect.
Who Will Be Affected?
Current holders of valid Florida driver’s licenses or ID cards are not required to replace their documents immediately; existing IDs will remain valid under this new law. The requirement will phase in as individuals go through the renewal or replacement process starting in 2027. For those who have recently renewed their driver’s licenses or IDs, these documents will remain valid until their expiration date.
