New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away at his home in Latur, Maharashtra, at the age of 90. According to family members, he succumbed to a brief illness on Friday, as reported by news agency PTI.

A Distinguished Political Career

Shivraj Patil was one of the most experienced parliamentarians in the Congress party. He proudly represented Latur as a seven-time Member of Parliament and held several key political roles throughout his career. Notably, he served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and held multiple Union portfolios under the administrations of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and later in the UPA government. His tenure as Union Home Minister spanned from 2004 to 2008.

Contributions to Maharashtra Politics

Patil’s political journey began in Maharashtra, where he first served as president of the Latur municipality in the late 1960s. His impressive career continued as he held various positions including Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Deputy Speaker, and Speaker of the State Assembly. His ability to navigate national politics allowed him to chair committees and lead parliamentary groups, emphasizing his influential role in legislative affairs.

Governor and Author

From 2010 to 2015, Patil served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh.
