    Introduction

Recent social media claims linking eggs to cancer have caused widespread concern. However, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has firmly rejected these assertions, stating that eggs sold in India are safe for consumption. This article explores FSSAI’s clarifications on the issue.

    Addressing Misleading Claims

The FSSAI specifically addressed the concerns surrounding nitrofuran metabolites (AOZ). The authority emphasized that the use of nitrofurans is strictly prohibited throughout the poultry and egg production process in India. According to FSSAI, any claims suggesting that eggs contain cancer-causing substances are misleading and scientifically unfounded.

Understanding Extraneous Maximum Residue Limits (EMRL)

FSSAI explained that the Extraneous Maximum Residue Limit (EMRL) for nitrofuran metabolites is set at 1.0 µg/kg. This limit serves solely as a regulatory detection threshold rather than a permissible level. An official stated, “Trace detections below the EMRL do not amount to a food safety violation and do not pose a health risk.”

    Aligning with Global Standards

FSSAI noted that India’s food safety standards are in line with global practices. Both the European Union and the United States have banned nitrofurans, designating reference values exclusively for enforcement purposes. The differences in numerical benchmarks arise from varying analytical methods rather than discrepancies in safety standards.

    No Established Link to Cancer

The authority highlighted that no causal link has been established between dietary exposure to trace levels of nitrofuran metabolites and cancer. Furthermore, no reputable health authority worldwide has associated the regular consumption of eggs with an increased cancer risk.

    Specific Reports Addressed

In response to reports involving a particular egg brand, FSSAI clarified that such findings are typically isolated and batch-specific. These issues may result from inadvertent contamination or feed-related factors and do not reflect the overall integrity of the egg supply chain.

Conclusion: Eggs Remain Nutritious and Safe

FSSAI urged consumers to rely on official advisories and scientific evidence. The authority reiterated that eggs remain a nutritious and safe part of a balanced diet when produced and consumed according to established food safety norms.
