Government Plans 7-Km Tunnel to Enhance Kedarnath Connectivity

Introduction

The government is taking significant steps to improve accessibility to Kedarnath, aiming to reduce travel time and enhance safety for pilgrims by constructing a 7-km tunnel.

Project Overview

This new tunnel will connect Chaumasi in Kalimath Valley, near Guptkashi, to Sonprayag, the start point of the forthcoming ropeway project, which will transport pilgrims to the Kedarnath shrine.

Benefits of the Tunnel

The construction of this twin-tube tunnel will not only serve as an alternative route but also function as an emergency escape route during adverse weather conditions. To further bolster accessibility, plans are in place for a feasibility study on constructing a walkway and pedestrian tunnel from the Chaumasi side leading to the Kedarnath shrine.

Current Road Conditions

Currently, all vehicles traveling to Sonprayag and Gauri Kund utilize NH-107. As per the new plan, the existing one-lane road in the Kalimath Valley, overseen by the Uttarakhand government, will be expanded to two lanes to accommodate increased traffic once the tunnel is operational.

Government Discussions

Recently, the Ministry of Road Transport held detailed discussions with the Uttarakhand government regarding this proposal. They noted the large influx of pilgrims and tourists, which reached 17.7 lakh last year and is projected to rise to 25 lakh by 2030 and 40 lakh by 2040.

Geological Investigations

Learning from past projects, such as the Sylkiyara tunnel episode, the government will conduct extensive geological and hydrological studies before moving forward with the construction.

Upcoming Ropeway Project

In addition to the tunnel, the government has awarded the 12.9-km Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway project to Adani Enterprises, which is expected to be operational by 2031-32. This ropeway will have the capability to transport 1,800 pilgrims per hour, with a one-way trip taking just 40 minutes.
