Ben Stokes has candidly shared his feelings of being “quite lucky” to be alive after a harrowing training incident that left him with a broken cheekbone. This terrifying event serves as a stark reminder of how close he came to a more serious outcome. During a net session in February, while coaching academy players at Durham, Stokes was struck directly in the face by a cricket ball. Reflecting on the incident, he described it as “pretty nasty” but acknowledged that, in hindsight, it could have been far worse.

“I copped one straight in the face,” Stokes recounted. “Just a couple of inches one way or the other, I might not be here doing this interview.” Following this severe blow, the 34-year-old had to undergo major facial surgery. Despite the seriousness of his injury, Stokes expressed gratitude, stating, “All things considered… I’ve got out quite lucky. So pretty thankful for that,” calling the outcome the “best result of a bad situation.”

The training accident disrupted Stokes’ preparations for the season, pushing back his return to competitive cricket by more than a month.
