As part of his ongoing tour in the United States, Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh engaged in high-level discussions with prominent leaders from the US Air Force. Key topics included reinforcing the defense partnership, shared strategic priorities, and the procurement of MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones.
Full Honors Arrival at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling
On April 8, Air Chief Marshal Singh received a full honors welcome at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. He met with Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink and Chief of Staff Gen Ken Wilsbach at the Pentagon. Gen Wilsbach highlighted the significance of the visit, stating, “It was an honor to host Air Chief Marshal AP Singh.” The discussions focused on modernizing defense capabilities, training opportunities, and maintaining a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
India’s Procurement of MQ-9B Drones
During their discussions, Gen Wilsbach emphasized the importance of India’s acquisition of MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones. He assured continued US support for their effective integration into Indian armed forces operations. On October 15, 2024, India signed a landmark deal worth approximately $4 billion (around ₹32,000 crore) to procure 31 MQ-9B Predator drones from the US. This agreement consists of 15 SeaGuardians for the Navy and 16 SkyGuardians for the Army and Air Force, enhancing surveillance capabilities along the borders with China and Pakistan.
Focus on Joint Training and Interoperability
In a recent post on X, the IAF chief highlighted the success of his discussions with US officials, stating that the focus was on joint training, interoperability, and modernization efforts alongside the MQ-9B drones. Singh also visited Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado, where he received briefings centered on the North American Aerospace Defense Command mission, which prioritizes aerospace warning and control.
Engaging with US Air Force Warfare Center
Air Chief Marshal Singh’s itinerary included a visit to Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. At this location, he received briefings at the US Air Force Warfare Center and participated in a familiarization flight aboard an F-15EX Eagle II. Singh remarked on the importance of such opportunities for enhancing joint interoperability and strengthening strategic partnerships between the air forces of India and the United States.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects
Following his meetings, Singh engaged in staff talks covering multiple topics, including the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Programme, airlift tactics training, and full-spectrum MQ-9 operations. These discussions underscore the continuous commitment of both nations to bolster their defense collaboration and adapt to evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
By focusing on strategic partnerships and procurement of advanced technologies like the MQ-9B drones, India and the US are concretely working towards a more integrated defense framework that addresses mutual security concerns.
