IAF Airlifts Tigress from Pench to Ramgarh Vishdhari: A Landmark Operation

Introduction

A significant milestone in wildlife conservation was achieved on Sunday when a three-year-old tigress was airlifted from Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh to Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. This operation, conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF), marks a vital step in the renewed inter-state tiger translocation program aimed at bolstering tiger populations across India.

Preparations and Groundwork

According to forest officials, the translocation operation was preceded by nearly a month of meticulous groundwork in Pench. Teams set up around 50 AI-enabled camera traps and motion-sensor cameras throughout the Kurai and Rukhad ranges to effectively monitor the tigress’s movements, territory utilization, and daily behavior. This continuous data review enabled the teams to identify optimal windows for her capture.

Execution of the Operation

On the day of the operation, teams strategically positioned themselves to minimize disturbances around the tigress. An officer involved in the operation emphasized, “Margin for error in such operations is extremely small. Every step, from tracking to flight, was planned in advance.”

Wildlife veterinarians tranquilized the tigress according to strict protocols, and ground staff ensured that the area was secure, preventing civilian movement. Prior to her transport, a health examination was conducted to assess her condition.

Airlifting Process

Following the examination, the tigress was placed in a specially designed transport crate equipped with proper ventilation and monitoring access. Her vital signs were closely monitored as the crate was transported to a designated helipad within the reserve.

An Mi-17 helicopter arrived at dawn, and the loading process was executed swiftly to minimize ground time. Senior veterinarians and forest officers from both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan accompanied the tigress, constantly monitoring her health throughout the flight.

Advantages of Airlifting

Officials highlighted the benefits of airlifting over traditional road transport, which included significantly reduced travel time and lower stress levels for the animal. This approach also mitigated the risks associated with traversing forest corridors and human-populated areas.

A Template for Future Translocations

This operation is viewed as a model for future inter-state tiger translocations, sanctioned by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The NTCA has approved the translocation of 15 tigers from Madhya Pradesh to Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, as part of a comprehensive conservation initiative.

This successful airlift not only enhances the genetic diversity of tiger populations in Rajasthan but also sets a benchmark for future conservation efforts.
