Details of the Alleged Terrorist Attack

Federal authorities claim Sturdivant was stopped just days before New Year’s Eve while allegedly planning a mass-casualty attack. He has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Extremist Social Media Posts

The FBI revealed that Sturdivant’s digital footprint was rife with extremist content linked to ISIS. In December 2025, he shared an image featuring two figurines of Jesus, captioned with inflammatory rhetoric: “May Allah curse the cross worshipers.” This post mirrored ISIS’s calls for violence against non-believers, including Christians and Jews.

Undercover Operation by the FBI

The FBI became aware of Sturdivant on December 18, 2025, following reports of his pro-ISIS online activity. It was during these investigations that he began communicating with an undercover FBI agent posing as an ISIS supporter. In conversations, Sturdivant explicitly stated, “I will do jihad soon,” identifying himself as “a soldier of the state,” referencing ISIS.

Weapons and Planned Attacks

According to the criminal complaint, on December 14, 2025, Sturdivant sent the undercover agent an image showcasing two hammers and a knife. Prosecutors noted that ISIS propaganda has previously encouraged such knife attacks in Western nations. He identified a specific grocery store in North Carolina as his target and discussed obtaining a firearm to complement his weapons.

Upon searching his home, the FBI found two butcher knives and two hammers hidden under Sturdivant’s bed, corresponding to the image he shared. Additionally, tactical gloves, a vest, and a list of targets were seized, all allegedly collected for the planned attack.

Aspirations for Martyrdom

On December 19, 2025, Sturdivant pledged allegiance to ISIS through a voice recording. A search of his residence on December 29 revealed handwritten notes, including one titled "New Year’s Attack 2026." Prosecutors indicated this document outlined plans to stab as many civilians as possible, with a goal of killing up to 21 individuals.

Notably, the notes referred to a “martyrdom op,” with intentions to attack responding police officers so that he could be killed in action. As Assistant Attorney General John A.
