New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with visiting Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker. During their talks, both leaders emphasized the need for stable, sustainable, and lasting peace in Ukraine and West Asia, asserting that military conflict is not a viable solution.
Historic Visit: First Austrian Chancellor in 42 Years
This visit marks the first by an Austrian chancellor in 42 years, leading to the signing of over a dozen agreements in critical areas such as counterterrorism, military affairs, and technology.
Global Stability: A Shared Commitment
In his media statement, Modi acknowledged that the world is currently facing a serious and tense situation whose impact is felt globally. “In such a tense global environment, India and Austria agree that solutions cannot be achieved through military conflict. Whether in Ukraine or West Asia, we support a stable, sustainable, and lasting peace,” he stated, emphasizing the need for global institutional reform.
Focus on Dialogue and Diplomacy in West Asia
Regarding West Asia, MEA Secretary Sibi George highlighted both nations’ commitment to promoting dialogue and diplomacy, which includes ensuring safe and unimpeded maritime passage. In relation to Ukraine, both countries endorsed the idea of comprehensive and lasting peace based on the UN Charter and international law.
Joint Efforts Against Terrorism
Modi reiterated that eradicating terrorism is a shared commitment between India and Austria. The two countries signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a Joint Working Group on Counterterrorism and condemned terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism. Specifically, they addressed incidents such as the Pahalgam attack and the Red Fort incident.
Framework for Military Cooperation and Defence Technology
A separate LoI aims to create an institutional framework for military cooperation and a partnership in defense technology, building upon the existing India-EU Defence and Security Partnership.
Boosting Bilateral Relations: Modi’s Vienna Visit
Bilateral relations took a significant leap forward in 2024 during Modi’s visit to Vienna, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years. This trip resulted in six agreements and nine announcements covering high-technology, education, space, startups, and cybersecurity.
A New Era of Cooperation
Modi pointed out that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signifies a new phase in diplomatic ties, noting that relations with Austria are entering a new era of cooperation across crucial sectors such as defense, semiconductors, technology, and biotechnology.
