NEW DELHI: On Thursday, India raised significant concerns during a United Nations meeting about the ongoing threats to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, India called for the immediate restoration of safe navigation and urged regional players to exercise restraint.
Maritime Security: An Essential Aspect for India
During the UN General Assembly’s discussion under the Veto Initiative titled “The Situation in the Middle East,” India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Harish P, emphasized the critical importance of maritime security for the nation’s energy and economic interests.
"An aspect of particular concern for India, regarding energy and economic security, is commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. We condemn the military attacks targeting commercial shipping in this conflict," he stated.
Strong Condemnation of Attacks on Civilian Maritime Activity
Ambassador Harish firmly condemned attacks on civilian maritime operations. He stressed that such actions were entirely unacceptable, stating, "We reiterate that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or otherwise impeding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, are things we cannot tolerate."
Call for Adherence to International Law
In his address, Harish urged the international community to ensure the free movement of trade through this vital waterway. He called for full respect for international law, emphasizing, "Safe and unimpeded freedom of navigation and global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz must be restored at the earliest."
Acknowledging Human Impact
Highlighting the humanitarian aspect of the conflict, he noted the impact on Indian nationals affected by the turmoil. "The precious lives of Indian seafarers aboard ships have been lost during the course of this conflict," he added, underscoring the personal toll of the ongoing strife.
Advocating for Restraint and Diplomacy
Referring to the broader context of the conflict in Iran and the Gulf region, Harish restated India’s commitment to advocating for restraint and diplomatic solutions. "Since the conflict’s onset on February 28, 2026, India has urged all states to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize civilian safety," he remarked.
Respect for Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity
Reaffirming India’s stance on global sovereignty, Harish articulated, "We call for the respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states."
Growing Geopolitical Tensions
India’s comments come at a time of heightened geopolitical unrest and increasing concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz, recognized as one of the world’s most critical maritime trade corridors.
These statements reflect India’s proactive stance on maritime security and its significant role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
