India Monitoring Situation in Iran

NEW DELHI: India is closely following the developments in Iran, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday. This comes in light of widespread protests in Iran sparked by inflation and currency devaluation.

Travel Advisory Issued for Indian Nationals

On January 5, New Delhi advised Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Iran, urging those already in the country to exercise caution and steer clear of areas experiencing protests or demonstrations.

Weekly Media Briefing Insights

During a recent media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed questions regarding the situation in Iran. He emphasized, “We are closely following the developments in Iran. We have also issued an advisory. We have some 10,000 Indian nationals and people of Indian origin in that country.”

Protests Gaining Momentum in Iran

The protests, which began approximately two weeks ago in Tehran, have since spread across numerous Iranian provinces, leading to several fatalities. The unrest has been primarily triggered by a significant drop in the value of the Iranian currency, rial, against the US dollar.

Concerns Over Detained Indian Crew Members

Jaiswal was also asked about the detention of several Indian crew members on board a tanker seized by Iranian authorities last December. The tanker was reportedly confiscated for alleged regulatory violations.

“Yes, we have sought consular access… We understand that 10 of them have been detained. Our embassy is in touch with the Iranian authorities on this matter, and we have sought consular access to inquire about their well-being and provide any necessary assistance,” Jaiswal stated.
