On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India issued a stern condemnation concerning the violence against Hindus and other minority groups in Bangladesh. This response comes amid escalating tensions and attacks that have raised international concerns.

MEA’s Strong Statement

Speaking on the matter, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal articulated, "In the last few days, we have issued a couple of statements rejecting the false narrative being projected in Bangladesh." This clarification highlights India’s vigilance regarding the situation.

Awareness of the Ongoing Crisis

The spokesperson also acknowledged the tragic killing of a Hindu man, Amrit Mondal, stating, "We are aware of the recent developments in Bangladesh and are closely monitoring the situation." The focus on this incident underscores the urgent need for intervention.

Grave Concerns Over Minority Safety

Jaiswal expressed deep concern over continuous hostilities against minorities, including Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists in Bangladesh. He condemned the recent brutal murder of a Hindu youth in Mymensingh, emphasizing that the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

Documented Incidents of Violence

The MEA noted that independent sources have documented over 2,900 violent incidents against minorities, including killings, arson, and land grabbing, during the tenure of the interim government. This alarming statistic underscores the severity of the crisis.

The Bangladeshi Government’s Response

In the aftermath of Amrit Mondal’s lynching, the interim government led by Yunus stated that the incident was not related to communal violence, claiming Mondal had been implicated in serious criminal cases. Additionally, they noted a proliferation of misleading information on social media regarding the killing.

Regarding the return of BNP leader Tarique Rahman after a 17-year absence, the MEA highlighted India’s support for free and fair elections in Bangladesh, indicating that this development should be viewed in this context.
