Successful Flight Test of MPATGM
NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the successful flight test of the indigenous Third Generation Fire & Forget Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) with top attack capability, describing it as a pivotal step toward achieving Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The missile underwent rigorous testing against a moving target on January 11 at the KK Ranges in Ahilya Nagar, Maharashtra, as confirmed by a statement from the Ministry of Defence.

The minister’s office shared the news on X, stating, “The Third Generation Fire & Forget Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) with top attack capability was flight-tested successfully against a moving target by the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad.” Rajnath Singh commended the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), DCPP Partners, and the industry for their achievements, emphasizing that this milestone strengthens India’s self-reliance in defense technology.
Advanced Indigenous Technologies
The MPATGM integrates a range of advanced indigenous technologies, featuring:
- Imaging Infrared Homing Seeker: Provides precision targeting capabilities.
- All-Electric Control Actuation System: Ensures operational efficacy.
- Fire Control System: Enhances targeting accuracy.
- Tandem Warhead: Capable of defeating modern main battle tanks.
- High-Performance Sighting System: Aids in both day and night operations.
Various DRDO laboratories, including Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh, contributed to its development.
Target Simulation and Launch Capabilities
During the trial, the Thermal Target System, developed by Defence Laboratory Jodhpur, simulated a target tank. The Imaging Infrared seeker allows for combat operations during both day and night. Notably, the missile can be launched from either a tripod or a vehicle-mounted launcher, offering flexibility in deployment.
Development-Cum-Production Partners
Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited play key roles as the Development-Cum-Production Partners for the MPATGM weapon system.
Congratulatory Remarks
Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to DRDO and the defence industry, affirming that this success is a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in defense capabilities. Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, also praised the team for the successful trial, stating that it is a crucial step towards integrating this weapon system into the Indian Army.
