Texas GOP leader Alexander Duncan has once again ignited controversy with his remarks regarding a Hindu temple in Texas. In a post reacting to a video of the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, Duncan declared, "This does not belong in Texas!" His comment followed a description of the temple that evoked feelings of being in India for the video’s creator.

Misguided Notions on Worship

Duncan further added, “We do not need or want temples in our state that are used to worship false, demonic gods and idols. ‘You shall have no other gods before me.’ Exodus 20:3." Such statements have not gone unnoticed, as this is not the first time Duncan has attracted criticism for his views on Hinduism. Previously, he has labeled the 90-foot Hanuman statue in Texas as a ‘false god.’

Viral Backlash on Social Media

The backlash ensued quickly, with social media users decrying Duncan’s remarks as a manifestation of ‘idol worship’ and laying blame on Texas Governor Greg Abbott for not addressing such bigotry. Many expressed fears that Ohio might mirror Texas should Indian-American Vivek Ramaswamy, a practicing Hindu, ascend to the governorship.

Entrepreneur Responds: Political Consequences Loom

An Indian-American entrepreneur, Ram Prasad, responded to Duncan’s incendiary comments. He warned that if Republicans persist in fostering such bigotry, it could result in a significant shift of votes and financial support toward Democrats. "Hindu American population in Texas will touch a million in a few years. We vote in high numbers and have high median incomes. Such bigotry will only mean more money and votes will go to Dems," he asserted.

According to Pew Research, approximately 570,000 out of the 4.9 million Indians in the United States reside in Texas.
