A Shaky Start
NEW DELHI: India launched their T20 World Cup journey with a win against the USA, but captain Suryakumar Yadav candidly acknowledged the team’s struggles following a turbulent beginning. Despite a rocky start, India posted a total of 161/9, mainly due to Suryakumar’s remarkable innings of 84 runs off 49 balls, after the top and middle orders faltered.
USA’s Response
The USA managed to score 132/8 in their reply, as India’s bowlers effectively controlled the game and secured a 29-run victory. This win highlighted crucial areas where the Indian team needs improvement.
Suryakumar’s Honest Assessment
After the match, Suryakumar reflected on the pressure of being at 77/6, admitting, “We could’ve batted a little better.” He emphasized the importance of not using the conditions as an excuse. "It was a little different wicket from what it is always at Wankhede,” he noted, acknowledging the unusual pitch and morning light.
Strategic Approach at the Crease
Receiving the Man of the Match award for his exceptional performance, Suryakumar discussed his mindset during the innings. He stated, “I always felt that there was a need for a batter to bat till the end. I never felt that it was a 180-190 wicket. I felt it was a 140 wicket.”
He also mentioned advice from coach Gautam Gambhir, who encouraged him to stay at the crease and trust his capabilities. “Gauti bhai told me during the break after the 14 overs to just try and bat till the end,” Suryakumar added.
Learning from Experience
Drawing from his experience playing in Mumbai streets, he focused on timing his shots and managing innings under stress. “I knew definitely someday it was going to come… I was trying to bat in such a way, hold the innings for the team,” he shared, reflecting on his personal journey.
Bowlers Shine in Defense
On the bowling front, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Axar Patel played pivotal roles in taking crucial wickets, keeping the USA’s chase under control. Although players like Milind Kumar and Suraj Krishnamurthi made valuable contributions, they couldn’t compete with India’s seasoned bowlers during critical moments.
Conclusion: A Hard-Earned Victory
Earlier in the match, India found themselves in a precarious position at 77/6 after Shadley van Schalkwyk’s impressive four-wicket haul, including three wickets in a single over. However, Suryakumar’s composed performance revitalized the innings, providing the bowlers with a defendable total.
Ultimately, India’s 29-run victory was a testament to their resilience and highlighted areas that require further attention as they progress in the tournament.
