Father’s Dream Inspires Vishvanath Suresh’s Boxing Glory

    A Legacy of Boxing

In Chennai, a remarkable story unfolds as 21-year-old Vishvanath Suresh continues the legacy of his father’s dreams. Once a promising boxer himself, Vishvanath’s father, Suresh, transitioned from the boxing ring to the tailoring profession, sacrificing his own ambitions to pave the way for his son. Today, Vishvanath stands proud as the gold medalist in the 50kg category at the recent Asian Boxing Championships, becoming the only Indian male to ascend the podium.

    Triumph Against the Odds

Vishvanath’s journey to victory wasn’t without challenges. In a defining moment during the quarterfinals, he faced off against reigning world champion and world No. 1, Sanzhar Tashkenbay. Demonstrating remarkable skill and composure, Vishvanath triumphed in all his bouts by unanimous decision, marking this victory as his first major senior achievement.

    Confidence in the Ring

"This is a very big achievement, and the medal will boost my confidence ahead of the Commonwealth and Asian Games," Vishvanath shared in an interview. He emphasized his strategy of viewing the world champion opponent as "just another boxer," which minimized pressure and allowed him to focus on his abilities. As he gained confidence throughout the match, he eventually knocked down Tashkenbay, securing his win.

    A Foundation Built on Support

Behind this remarkable success lies the unwavering support of his father, Suresh. A former national-level medallist, Suresh dedicated himself to nurturing Vishvanath’s talent while steering him towards the sport he once loved. Despite facing numerous rejections due to Vishvanath’s slight build, including a setback with the Madras Engineer Group in Bengaluru, perseverance paid off when Vishvanath was finally selected by the Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune in 2018.

    A Rising Star in Boxing

Vishvanath’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. He earned his first notable recognition by clinching gold at the Asian Youth Championships in 2022 and is now setting his sights on future competitions. As his boxing journey continues, he embodies the spirit of perseverance and ambition, all driven by a father’s dream fulfilled.
