NEW DELHI: The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced another setback in their IPL campaign, suffering a 32-run defeat against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on a challenging two-paced pitch. Pursuing a target of 193 runs, KKR struggled throughout their innings, ultimately ending at 160/7. This loss highlights significant issues in their batting strategy, as the team now finds itself with just one win from the first five matches.
KKR’s Batting Falters Under Pressure
KKR’s chase got off to a rocky start, as wickets tumbled in quick succession. Notably, Noor Ahmad played a pivotal role, taking down key players such as Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, and Cameron Green, causing a dramatic collapse from 79/2 to 90/6. Akeal Hossain also added to the mounting pressure with his economical bowling.
Rahane (28 off 22) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (27 off 19) provided a brief partnership of 50 runs, but their slow scoring hampered KKR’s chances, especially on a pitch where runs were hard to come by. The early dismissals of Finn Allen and Sunil Narine by Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed only worsened the situation for KKR.
Although Rovman Powell (31 off 22) and Ramandeep Singh (35* off 23) attempted a late rally, the required run rate ultimately proved insurmountable.
CSK Builds, Then Controls the Game
In contrast, CSK started strong, achieving 72/2 during the powerplay, driven by impressive performances from Sanju Samson (48 off 32) and Ayush Mhatre (38 off 17). Mhatre’s aggressive batting, featuring two sixes and a spectacular “Kapil Dev-style Nataraja Shot,” set the tone for a competitive total.
After the powerplay, KKR’s spinners, including Sunil Narine, Anukul Roy, and Varun Chakravarthy, effectively brought the run rate down, allowing just 68 runs over ten overs. Kartik Tyagi also stood out with his speed and variations during the closing stages of the innings.
Dewald Brevis (41 off 29) and Sarfaraz Khan (23 off 18) ensured that CSK finished with a solid total of 192/5, showcasing their balanced performance with both bat and ball. KKR’s outdated batting approach and lack of execution ultimately cost them dearly in this matchup.
