Sri Lanka’s fast bowler, Nuwan Thushara, has approached the Colombo District Court for legal recourse to secure his participation in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). He has filed a case against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), seeking a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that would allow him to play in the tournament.

Court Hearing Scheduled

The court heard the matter today, with a full hearing set for April 9. Thushara’s petition names several SLC officials as defendants, including President Shammi Silva, Secretary Bandula Dissanayake, Treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda, and CEO Ashley de Silva.

Previous Participation and NOC Denial

Thushara, who was picked by the Royal Challengers for the upcoming IPL season, highlighted his participation in the 2024 and 2025 editions when he received NOCs from SLC. However, the board has denied him a certificate for 2026, citing that he did not meet specific fitness standards.

Claims of Unreasonable Refusal

The pacer emphasized that his contract with SLC concluded on March 31, 2026 and that he has communicated his intent not to renew, stepping back from international cricket. He contends that the refusal to issue an NOC on fitness grounds is unreasonable, especially since he has been informed he would not be selected for national duties.

Argument on Fitness Levels

Thushara further asserted that his current fitness levels are in line with his career standards, and noted that SLC has issued NOCs in the past without similar objections. He has warned that not securing the NOC may lead to his replacement by the IPL franchise, jeopardizing his income and career opportunities.

Seeking Court Confirmation

Through this legal action, Thushara is requesting the court to confirm his entitlement to the NOC, alongside both interim and permanent orders directing SLC to issue the needed certificate. This would ensure his eligibility not only for IPL 2026 but also for other overseas leagues.
