Overview of the Strikes
Israel’s military has launched a series of air strikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. This military action occurred shortly after the Lebanese army announced the completion of the first phase of its disarmament plan against the Iran-backed group operating in southern Lebanon.
Targeted Areas and Objectives
According to a statement from the Israeli military, the strikes were aimed at several specific locations within Lebanon. The primary targets included weapons storage facilities, a weapons production site, and numerous launch sites and military structures associated with Hezbollah. These actions were part of Israel’s ongoing strategy to counter Hezbollah’s military activities.
Location of the Attacks
Reports from Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) indicated that the strikes affected regions located far from the Israeli border, including southern Lebanon and the eastern Bekaa Valley, where Hezbollah maintains a significant presence. Thankfully, no casualties were reported immediately after the incidents.
Context of the Strikes
These air strikes occurred despite a ceasefire that had ended months of intense conflict in November 2024, following over a year of hostilities between the two sides. Under the terms of this ceasefire, Hezbollah was expected to withdraw its forces north of the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border, and dismantle its military infrastructure in the area.
Continued Tensions and Israeli Justifications
Despite the ceasefire, Israel has persisted in its military operations within Lebanon, arguing that such actions are necessary to target Hezbollah sites suspected of rearming. The Israeli military stated that the air strikes represented a violation of the existing understandings between Israel and Lebanon, highlighting the ongoing threats posed to Israel’s security.
Responses from the Lebanese Government
In the wake of Israel’s military actions, the Lebanese army announced that it had successfully achieved the objectives of its initial disarmament phase concerning Hezbollah. This initiative aims to extend disarmament efforts throughout the entire country. Amid international pressure, particularly from the United States, the Lebanese government acknowledges the need to address Hezbollah’s military capabilities.
Reactions from Israeli Officials
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the Lebanese army’s efforts but argued that they were merely a "beginning" and insufficient for complete disarmament. Netanyahu’s office emphasized that the ceasefire agreement explicitly called for Hezbollah’s full disarmament.
The Ongoing Conflict
Despite the stipulated ceasefire, hostilities have continued, with Israeli strikes resulting in casualties, including a reported death in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese army claims to have taken charge of security in areas traditionally controlled by Hezbollah, dismantling key infrastructure, albeit acknowledging the ongoing challenges involved.
Hezbollah’s Stance
Hezbollah, however, has firmly refused to disarm, maintaining its military presence in regions north of the Litani River, including the strategic Bekaa Valley. The group has contested Israeli accusations of military reconstruction, while accusing Israel of violating ceasefire conditions, complicating efforts to stabilize southern Lebanon.
