Urgent Call for Safety of Indian Medical Students in Bangladesh

    Background of the Situation

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], December 23 (ANI) — The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting immediate action to safeguard Indian medical students studying in Bangladesh amidst ongoing protests and instances of violence. This situation is particularly acute in Dhaka and its surrounding regions.

    Concerns for Student Safety

In the letter to the Prime Minister, the association stressed the urgent need for intervention to ensure the safety and security of over 9,000 Indian students, including more than 4,000 from the Kashmir Valley, currently pursuing medical education in Bangladesh.

    Disturbing Reports from Students

Nasir Khuehami, the National Convenor of the Association, shared alarming reports from students in Dhaka who have been advised to conceal their identities for safety. This alarming situation has raised serious concerns for the well-being of Indian students abroad, especially following the reported death of a student leader.

    Plight of Students on Ground

The JKSA highlighted that many students are confined to their hostels, facing severe restrictions on movement. Parents back in India are filled with anxiety for their children’s safety amidst the prevailing unrest. The students are enduring fear, uncertainty, and a sense of vulnerability.

    Distress Calls from Families

Khuehami mentioned that the association has been receiving distressing messages from students and their families, expressing their anxiety over the deteriorating conditions in Bangladesh.

    Call for Government Action

In light of the escalating tensions, the JKSA urges Prime Minister Modi to ensure the immediate protection of Indian medical students. They also call upon the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to engage with the Government of Bangladesh for firm guarantees regarding the safety of Indian nationals.

    Evacuation Plans

The Association has proposed that if the situation continues to deteriorate, the Government of India should prepare for potential evacuations of Indian students, ensuring their safe return home. They assert that timely evacuation is crucial to prevent any untoward incidents.

    Confidence in Leadership

The JKSA expressed faith in Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, stating that India has consistently supported its citizens in crises. The safety of these students, who are future doctors of the nation, should remain a top priority for the government.
