Jammu’s Statehood Demand Rejected: A Call for Ladakh’s Reunion

    Overview of Jammu’s Statehood Demand

In a significant political development, the Omar Abdullah-led government has officially rejected the call for statehood for the Jammu region, labeling the demand as “unviable.” Instead, the emphasis has shifted towards a potential reunion of Ladakh with Jammu and Kashmir.

    Minister Javed Rana’s Statements

Minister for Jal Shakti, Environment, and Tribal Affairs, Javed Rana, articulated that Jammu and Kashmir was once a fully-fledged state before it was bifurcated into Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. He criticized those advocating for further division, suggesting that they aim to fragment the region even further, mentioning Kanak Mandi, a historic wholesale market in Jammu, as a focal point of contention.

    Lack of Support for Statehood

Rana pointed out that while BJP legislators are at liberty to advocate for separate statehood for Jammu, there is no widespread support for such a move from various parts of the region, including the Pir Panjal areas of Rajouri and Poonch and the Chenab Valley. He expressed confidence that the day would come when Ladakh would once again become a part of Jammu and Kashmir.

    Political Landscape and BJP’s Position

Calls for a separate Jammu state have been revitalized by BJP legislators, including former minister Sham Lal Sharma. He emphasized that this demand is not new, recalling that he had raised it back in 2010. Sharma characterized the people of Jammu as more “nationalistic,” contrasting them with the politically unstable narrative associated with Kashmir. He accused the “Kashmir-based rulers” of discrimination against Jammu and advocated for a Hindu chief minister.

    Concerns Raised by BJP Leaders

BJP spokesperson Rajni Sethi highlighted the challenges faced by Jammu residents, suggesting that they suffer due to what she termed “fundamentalists in Kashmir.” She claimed that outside J&K, people sometimes view Jammu with suspicion, associating it with extremism.

    Response from National Conference

In response to these allegations, NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq condemned the BJP’s narrative, stating that their political agenda revolves around disparaging Kashmiris. He asserted that the government is committed to ensuring unity between Jammu and Kashmir and focuses on equitable development in both regions. The restoration of the Darbar Move, according to Sadiq, is a testament to the Abdullah government’s dedication to Jammu’s progress.
