Operation Sindoor: A Turning Point for the Indian Navy

NEW DELHI: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi disclosed on Thursday that the Indian Navy was merely minutes away from launching naval strikes against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor when Pakistan requested a halt to military actions. Speaking at the Naval Investiture Ceremony, Admiral Tripathi stated, “Operation Sindoor demonstrated exemplary readiness and resolve of the Indian Navy, as our units undertook swift deployment and maintained a highly aggressive posture throughout the operation. It is not a hidden fact anymore that we were just minutes away from striking Pakistan from the sea when they requested a stoppage of kinetic actions.”

    Strengthening National Confidence

Admiral Tripathi emphasized that the Navy’s actions during this critical operation not only bolstered national confidence but also showcased the Navy’s capabilities at the highest level. He recalled a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, “Besides Operation Sindoor and the relentless operational tempo through the year, we were also very proud to showcase the breadth and depth of our operational capabilities to the honourable Prime Minister during a historic 17-hour overnight embarkation with the Indian Navy on the Western Seaboard.”

    Background of Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives. The operation aimed to target and destroy terrorist bases in Pakistan, leading to the neutralization of several terrorists.

Naval Officers Honoured for Their Valor

The Navy Chief also awarded Yudh Seva Medals to Vice Admiral A N Pramod and Vice Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale for their critical roles in Operation Sindoor. Vice Admiral Pramod, as Director General Naval Operations, was acknowledged for his strategic planning and execution amidst rising tensions with Pakistan, effectively denying the Pakistan Navy operational space in the North Arabian Sea.

    Recognizing Heroism in the Navy

Vice Admiral Gokhale was recognized for his role in ensuring missile readiness and the combat deployment of 22 warships within a short span of 96 hours, which significantly constrained Pakistan’s naval movements. In addition, several other naval officers, including Captain Suraj Rebeira, Captain Vikas Garg, and Lieutenant Commander Rishabh Purbia, were awarded the Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) for their courageous contributions during the operation.
