Incident Overview
In a surprising incident on Saturday, a 55-year-old man from Jammu and Kashmir was detained for allegedly trying to offer namaz inside the Ram Mandir complex in Ayodhya. The situation escalated when he raised slogans after being approached by security personnel, according to the Uttar Pradesh police.
Identity of the Man
The individual has been identified as Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir. Superintendent of Police (Security) Balramchari Dubey confirmed Sheikh’s identity and the details surrounding the incident.
Sequence of Events
Sheikh reportedly entered the temple premises during the day, visited the shrine, and later sat near the Sita Rasoi area, seemingly preparing to offer namaz. Security personnel intervened promptly, leading to his detention by temple security staff before he was handed over to local police.
Claims of Mental Illness
Following the incident, Sheikh’s family claimed that he is mentally ill, presenting medical records from the psychiatry department of Srinagar Medical College. His son, Imran, expressed that the family was unaware of Sheikh’s travel to Ayodhya, emphasizing his father’s mental state.
“We didn’t know anything about it. He is totally unsound,” Imran stated.
Family’s Concerns
Imran revealed that his father often leaves home without informing anyone, having visited his in-laws just days prior. Neighbors corroborated his claims, stating that Sheikh has been undergoing treatment and is on medication. One neighbor remarked, “Had he been of sound mind, he would not have prayed inside a temple.”
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are currently questioning Sheikh to determine his intent and verifying the details of his travel, including the purpose of his visit to Ayodhya and the involvement of any accomplices. Preliminary checks indicated that he was carrying items such as cashews and raisins, and he reportedly told investigators that he was traveling to Ajmer.
Security Review
In light of the incident, senior police officers and intelligence agencies are reviewing the security arrangements at the Ram Mandir complex. The Ayodhya district administration and the Ram temple trust have yet to issue a statement on the matter.
This incident highlights the complexities surrounding communal spaces and the need for heightened security measures in sensitive areas.
