Assurance of Justice for Ram Narayan Bakel’s Family

In response to the tragic mob assault that led to the death of Ram Narayan Bakel in Walayar, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has vowed to take strict action against the perpetrators. He emphasized that such incidents are unacceptable in a progressive society like Kerala.

Formation of Special Investigation Team

A statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) revealed that a special investigation team, led by the Palakkad Superintendent of Police, has been established to thoroughly investigate the case. Vijayan assured the public that justice would be served.

“Justice will be ensured for the family of Ram Narayan Bakel, who was killed following a mob assault in Walayar, Palakkad. Strict action will be taken against those responsible,” the CMO stated.

Legal Actions and Compensation Considerations

The CMO also indicated that directives have been given to meticulously examine the details of the case, initiate necessary legal actions, and evaluate compensation for Bakel’s family.

“Such acts, which tarnish the reputation of a progressive society like Kerala, are completely unacceptable,” the statement added. “Everyone must remain vigilant to ensure that such incidents do not recur.”

Background of the Incident

The chilling case of mob violence occurred in Palakkad when Ram Narayan Bakel, a 31-year-old Dalit migrant labourer from Chhattisgarh, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of locals. He was misidentified as a Bangladeshi national or a thief following a theft incident in the area.

Ram Narayan Bakel: A Brief Profile

Originally from Karhi village in Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, Bakel migrated to Palakkad on December 13 in search of work. Employed as a daily-wage labourer, he was described by family members as extremely poor and is survived by his wife, Lalita, and two young sons, aged eight and nine.

Details of the Attack

According to police reports, the incident took place at Attappallam East in Walayar. A group of residents allegedly assaulted Bakel with sticks, inflicting severe injuries. He was taken to Palakkad District Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries. Before his death, Bakel told hospital staff that he was attacked by a mob accusing him of theft.

Postmortem Findings and Arrests

Preliminary postmortem findings indicated that Bakel died from excessive bleeding due to severe blunt-force injuries to the head and other areas of the body. The autopsy was conducted at the Government Medical College Hospital in Thrissur.

In connection with the alleged lynching, Kerala police have arrested five individuals from Attappallam: Anu (38), Prasad (34), Murali (38), Anandan (55), and Bipin (30). They have been presented in a local court and remanded to judicial custody, with more arrests likely as the investigation advances.

Ongoing Investigation

A case has been registered at the Walayar police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are currently examining CCTV footage, social media videos, and witness testimonies to identify additional suspects involved in the attack.

Following the incident, security has been heightened in the area to prevent any escalation of tensions. Police have confirmed Bakel’s identity through his Aadhaar card and have notified authorities in Chhattisgarh.
