A Historic Return to Bangladesh
DHAKA: Tarique Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), returned to Bangladesh on Thursday after over 17 years in self-exile in Britain. His homecoming is seen as a significant moment intended to energize party supporters and enhance the BNP’s prospects for the upcoming parliamentary elections on February 12.
First Address on Home Soil
In his inaugural speech since departing in 2008, Tarique drew comparisons between the political turbulence expected in 2024, spurred by the July uprising leading to the Sheikh Hasina government’s collapse, and the pivotal 1971 war of independence. He echoed Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous "I have a dream" speech, stating, "I have a plan."
A Call for Unity and Safety
As thousands of BNP supporters gathered along the July 36 Expressway, Tarique emphasized the need for unity among all Bangladeshis. He stated, "This country belongs to people of the hills and the plains, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians. We want to build a safe Bangladesh where every woman, man, and child can leave home and return safely."
Addressing Political Unrest
Tarique’s remarks came amid renewed political unrest following the death of student activist Sharif Osman Hadi on December 18. He urged all political factions to join hands for law and order, emphasizing that the struggle is for the economic rights of the people.
Honoring the Sacrifice of the Martyrs
Reflecting on the sacrifices made for the nation’s independence, he said, "If we are to repay the debt of the blood of those who were martyred in 1971 and 2024, we must build the Bangladesh we all dream of." He noted the need for collective action to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty.
Committing to Development and Peace
Referencing MLK Jr., Tarique affirmed, "I have a plan for the interest of the people and the country’s development." He called for support to implement this vision, vowing to maintain peace and order at any cost. His vision aims to create an inclusive Bangladesh where individuals, regardless of caste, creed, or faith, can live harmoniously.
A Symbolic Return
Upon his arrival, Tarique stood barefoot on Bangladeshi soil, a symbolic gesture marking his return to politics. Having lived in London since 2008, he has effectively led the BNP since 2018, following Khaleda Zia’s health deterioration. Shortly after his arrival, he visited the hospital where his mother is receiving treatment, marking their first reunion in the country after 17 years.
