State-owned Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL) has recently secured environmental clearance from the Argentine government for deep exploration of five brine lithium blocks in the South American nation. This clearance will facilitate the drilling of boreholes, enabling surveys and exploratory drilling to assess the total volume of lithium available for extraction.
Production Timeline and Government Initiatives
Piyush Goyal, the mines secretary, announced to reporters that production from these lithium blocks is anticipated to commence in 2029. He also mentioned that the government is developing a scheme for processing critical minerals, which is currently under advanced stages of finalization.
Collaborations and Global Exploration Efforts
KABIL has entered into an exploration and development agreement with a state-owned enterprise in Argentina’s Catamarca province. This partnership aims to bolster India’s lithium supplies while fostering the development of lithium mining and downstream sectors in both countries. Furthermore, India is actively seeking investment opportunities in lithium projects across Brazil, Canada, and Australia.
The Need for a Domestic Processing Value Chain
Goyal emphasized that India faces challenges in importing lithium from abroad due to the lack of a domestic processing value chain. He reiterated that the scheme for processing the critical mineral value chain is nearing approval, and further details will be shared upon confirmation. As lithium is a crucial raw material for batteries, this initiative is expected to strengthen the resilience of electric vehicle (EV) and storage batteries in India.
