Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has expressed his disappointment regarding Mohammed Siraj‘s omission from the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. According to De Villiers, Siraj’s absence is less about his form and more about the team balance.

Team Composition Over Individual Performance

In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, De Villiers stated that the decision to exclude Siraj was influenced by the combination of players rather than his recent performances. He noted, “We see Siraj in the ODI squad, he is one of the unlucky guys to miss out. But that is once again down to the balance.”

India’s Preference for a Varied Bowling Attack

De Villiers emphasized India’s strategic choice of bowlers, highlighting the significance of a diverse bowling lineup. With Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh leading the pace contingent, and Harshit Rana also being an all-rounder, the team appears to have a well-rounded bowling strategy. He remarked, “You have got Bumrah and Arshdeep. Harshit can hold the bat as well. So there are your three seamers. I think that is the reason why you went for Harshit because Siraj is only an outright bowler.”

The Focus on Spin Bowling

In his analysis, De Villiers pointed out that India’s focus for the tournament leans toward a spin-centric approach. He mentioned, “They do not want to focus too much on seam bowling. The focus is on the spinners. If they get wickets with the seamers upfront, they almost see it as a bonus in a way.” However, he reassured that Siraj remains a critical part of India’s long-term plans, particularly for future competitions like the 2027 World Cup.

Siraj’s IPL Performance and Future Prospects

Despite a solid performance in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, where he took 16 wickets in 15 matches, Siraj did not make it to the T20I squad in 2025. De Villiers acknowledged the depth in India’s bowling lineup, stating, “The problem with Harshit Rana with the new ball is that he doesn’t have a lot of experience at the international level. But if he can give you a few overs with Bumrah and Arshdeep, there are enough overs available.”

A Championship Team

De Villiers concluded his thoughts by affirming the well-rounded nature of India’s bowling unit, stating, “They also cover all bases with spin, and that’s where they will focus on trying to win games. When Bumrah has a quiet night, a Kuldeep comes through and gets you four and vice versa.” He noted, “Those are the kind of championship teams you want, and India has got all those bases covered."
