Douglas Dixon, a 61-year-old Green Card holder, had been residing in Florida since 2005. Unfortunately, his American dream came to an abrupt end when he was deported to Canada due to significant tax issues. Dixon, a grandfather, faced financial hardship during the pandemic, leading to the closure of his smoothie shop and an accumulation of over $30,000 in unpaid taxes.

The Consequences of Tax Evasion

In 2022, Dixon pleaded no contest to tax evasion and agreed to a repayment plan. Despite his efforts to pay back the owed amount, he still had approximately $12,000 outstanding. Under U.S. law, defrauding the government of over $10,000 is classified as an aggravated felony, which ultimately led to a serious consequence for Dixon.

Arrest and Detention

Before his arrest, Dixon was working for DoorDash to make ends meet. On February 10, during a routine check-in with his probation officer, he was unexpectedly confronted by a team of ICE officers. Shackled and transported to the notorious ICE detention center known as "Alligator Alcatraz," Dixon described the inhumane treatment he experienced there.

Inhumane Conditions at Alligator Alcatraz

Dixon reported that the conditions in the detention center were reminiscent of historical atrocities, stating, “Alligator Alcatraz is like (Nazi) Germany in 1939, updated with 2026 rules.” After being transferred to another facility, he fell ill due to the harsh conditions he faced during his detainment.

The Legal Proceedings

Despite his attorney presenting character references from 14 friends, including members of his hockey team, the judge ruled for Dixon’s deportation. After spending 21 years in the United States and 65 days in detention, he was placed on an American Airlines flight to Toronto on Wednesday. Tragically, he has also been banned from entering the U.S. for life.

In his final remarks, Dixon expressed disbelief at how the U.S. government treated individuals in detention, stating, “I did not think that the United States was going to treat people inhumanely —but they do not care about the human condition in those detention centers.” His experience raises significant concerns about the treatment of individuals within the immigration system and the consequences of financial struggles in a challenging economy.
