Lionel Messi Faces Legal Challenges in the U.S.

Lionel Messi is now entangled in a legal dispute in the United States. A Florida-based company, VID, claims that Messi’s absence from a scheduled match led to significant financial losses. According to reports from TMZ, VID alleges they invested millions expecting Messi’s participation, but his absence devalued the event.

Details of the Lawsuit Against Messi and the Argentine Football Association

The lawsuit was filed by VID, a Miami-based promoter that organizes sports and music events. The company claims to have signed a contract worth approximately $7 million with the Argentine Football Association for two exhibition matches in October. These games were scheduled against Venezuela and Puerto Rico, with Messi expected to play at least 30 minutes in each match unless injured.

Alleged Breach of Contract and Its Implications

Unfortunately, Messi did not participate in the match against Venezuela at Hard Rock Stadium, which VID asserts was a breach of the agreement. Compounding the issue, Messi went on to play for Inter Miami CF the following day, scoring two goals against Atlanta United, which VID claims proves he was fit to play. They highlight that they even provided a private suite for Messi and his family, despite his absence from the field.

Financial Losses and Venue Changes Contributing to the Controversy

Though Messi did participate in the second match against Puerto Rico, registering two assists in a 6-0 victory, VID asserts the damages had already been inflicted. They allege losses exceeding $1 million, significantly due to the venue change from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale, which was allegedly a result of poor ticket sales.

    Varied Responses from Stakeholders

The Argentine Football Association attributed the venue change to strict immigration regulations impacting fan attendance from Chicago, while local officials cited low ticket demand as the primary reason. Furthermore, VID claims they were promised future matches, including events in China, to compensate for their losses, which never materialized.

Previous Legal Issues and Messi’s Continued Success on the Field

This incident is not Messi’s first legal entanglement; just recently, Major League Soccer and Vancouver Whitecaps settled a case involving fans who expected to see Messi along with stars like Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets. Despite these controversies, Messi’s on-field performance remains remarkable. Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, he has netted 83 goals in 96 matches, contributing significantly to the team’s successes, including the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield, and MLS Cup. As he prepares for the upcoming World Cup, Messi’s role for Argentina is anticipated to be pivotal.
