Lucknow Doctor Arrested on Multiple Charges

Introduction to the Case

In a shocking turn of events, the Lucknow police apprehended a resident doctor from King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Friday. The doctor, identified as Rameezuddin alias Rameez (31), has been accused of repeatedly raping a junior colleague under the false promise of marriage, coercing her into an abortion, and pressuring her to convert her religion.

The Arrest Details

Rameez was taken into custody near the city station by a coordinated effort from the West Lucknow surveillance unit and Chowk police station. This arrest followed an internal investigation by KGMU, which concluded that Rameez had engaged in emotional, mental, and physical harassment towards the complainant.

University Response and Consequences

Earlier in the day, KGMU’s internal complaints committee recommended Rameez’s termination based on the available evidence. Vice-Chancellor Soniya Nityanand held a press conference stating, "This is the highest level of action a university can take on the grounds of indiscipline." Following the investigation, the university suspended Rameez on December 22 and banned him from entering the KGMU campus.

Background of the Accused

Originally from Pilibhit district, Rameez had been evading capture since he was booked on December 23, after a police complaint was lodged by the survivor. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vishwajeet Srivastava confirmed that an FIR was filed against Rameez for rape, causing miscarriage, and deceitful marriage under relevant legal provisions, including the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.

Investigation into Religious Conversion Allegations

In light of the serious allegations, KGMU has initiated a seven-member fact-finding committee chaired by Professor K.K. Singh. The committee is tasked with investigating the claims of forced religious conversion and extremism on campus. It is expected to submit its report within the next 10 days, aiming to clarify the situation surrounding these troubling allegations.

Conclusion

This incident raises significant concerns not only about the conduct of medical professionals but also the broader implications of harassment and conversion-related issues on educational campuses. Further investigations are anticipated as the case unfolds.
